Old World charm and clean curves are the trademark of this remodeled Manhattan Beach coastal home. The owners wanted a Spanish-style interior with better flow and fresh finishes. To this end, we reformatted the staircase and replaced an ornate baluster with a hand-forged iron railing.
The light-filled kitchen needed more storage, prep space, and circulation. We tackled these issues with a dramatic plaster range hood, custom oak cabinetry, and an appliance garage. The Calacatta Caldia marble counters and extra-high backsplash add elegance and accentuate the Mediterranean vibe. Handmade geometric pendant lights illuminate the expanded, eat-in island, while the butler’s nook is offset by the rich textures of handcrafted Zellige tile. Convenient touches include temperature-controlled wine storage and a range pot-filler.
We updated the dining area with ebony-wood, a soapstone counter, and reclaimed oak floating shelves. Awkward fireplaces in the great and living rooms were replaced with a single, see-through fireplace on a shared wall. Custom surrounds completed this move, including a sweeping, floor-to-ceiling overmantel in the living area.
Well-chosen materials and symmetry were our overall focus. Built-in bookshelves balance the new hearth placement, and we framed the ceiling with moldings painted the same gray-green as the built-ins. The effect is a cozy and evocative home.
